Who is the course intended for?
– The course is adapted in six languages – English, German, French, Czech, Dutch and Bulgarian and covers linguistic competence levels from A1 to B2 as per Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
– It is intended for young and old alike who wish to master the Bulgarian language for communication. Its varied topics make it ideal for learners from many walks of life – from the tourist to the businessman and diplomat, while the authentic materials and the enhanced linguistic information makes it suitable for university students of Bulgarian, as well as for other professional linguists. With its interactive multimedia format, “Bulgarian for Foreigners” can be used for self-study, as well as for group study with a teacher.
How is the “Bulgarian for Foreigners” course different?
– The opportunity for individual study and direct access to the required information at any time during the study process. You can set your own pace of learning.
– Another important feature of this course is that you can use it to suit your individual style of learning – if you have a good aural memory from hearing, you can mainly use the recordings, whereas if your strong point is visual memory, then you can benefit from the attractive design.
– For more in-depth knowledge you can use the so-called ‘links’ (additional files) on offer (Bulgarian grammar, Topic-based vocabulary lists and Country brief).
– In accordance with the latest methods for language teaching and learning, this course is notable for its dynamism and interactivity. It has been designed to offer you experience of the language in context, to hear and practise oral and written speech and through the entire learning process you will be able to observe and appraise yourself.
– Another important achievement of “Bulgarian for Foreigners” is the carefully selected and graded language material that aims at achieving maximum efficiency through excellent structuring rather than through undue recourse to words and structures.

The system contains:
– 24 course units
– 8 revision units
– Video film (8 episodes), videoscript
– 8 tests
– Glossary
– Bulgarian grammar
– Topic-based vocabulary lists
– Country brief

During your work with “Bulgarian for Foreigners” you will follow a consistent plot line with a fixed set of characters.

The plot is original and amusing: a group of specialists from various European countries, including Bulgaria, get together to work on a project financed by the EU. Work on the project involves travelling in Bulgaria, visiting various national monuments of cultural and historical significance.

The characters are a colourful lot, created by Donyo Donev’s masterful hand.

Animation is the most attractive part of the learning system. 12 texts are illustrated, treating various situations. The characters, original and memorable types, get involved in various comic situations and have a lot of interesting experiences. The learner will witness their informal communication, activities and relations. You will come across the absent-minded music professor Jack, who always forgets things, Boyan, the computer freak, Edmond, the contentious journalists or the joyfully barking Poofy inseparable from Maya.

In another plot line business vocabulary is introduced by means of comics.

The key words and expressions that should be remembered in a given unit are presented in a separate exercise. These are the so-called speech patterns.

The Video film is part of the revision units Communication+. It consists of 8 episodes and generalizes and broadens the knowledge on the relevant topic in authentic surroundings. The plot is based on an exceptionally topical theme – Tom Gillain, a 27-year-old Belgian, arrives in Bulgaria to buy a house in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains.

During his stay in Bulgaria, together with his friends Bobby and Milena, he has the opportunity to taste traditional Bulgarian dishes, the famous plum brandy and fragrant wines, to attend a Bulgarian wedding and even to fall in love…

The “I Chose the Language of Bulgaria” song, performed by Bulgarian rock band FSB, was specially written for the course.
